“It’s been something we’ve been talking about for many years, and looking forward to the day when this arrived,” Recording Academy’s senior vice president Bill Freimuth told the Los Angeles Times.

The past few years the Recording Academy has come under fire over their choices for the top awards such as Album of the Year. Back in February, many thought Beyoncé’s Lemonade was the rightful Album of the Year winner, but instead Adele’s 25 took home the award. During her acceptance speech Adele expressed how she was one of the many who thought Beyoncé deserved the award.

While the academy has been talking about transitioning their voting process, there were many technical challenges that stood in the way. “Security was always a major issue, because it could become a target for hackers,” Freimuth said.

The new voting process may be shifting to an online format, but that does not mean it will now become open to the public. Voting for the annual Grammy Awards will remain only for members of the Recording Acadmy (those with at least six credits on commercially released tracks).

The 2018 Grammys will mark the 60th installment of the awards show.
