Coca-Cola Is Really Being Used As Self-Tanner

By: Greg Sacidor

Summer is here and that means so too are the tans. Some will go to great lengths to make sure their skin looks as bronze as can be this summer and that includes using Coca-Cola as a self-tanner.

According to Allure, the technique of lathering up in the soft drink became popular last year in the U.K. and is still prevalent now. With Coca-Cola containing a caramel dye, it is believed by some that applied as any other tanning oil, the soft drink can give users a deep tan.

While it may lead to the tan that is highly sought after in today’s day and age, Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, recommends steering clear of the “dangerous” trend.

“Applying [Coca-Cola] to the skin may lead to a temporary darkening or staining of the skin, but because sodas are acidic, it may exfoliate dead cells, enhancing the ability of UV light to penetrate into the skin,” Zeichner told Allure. “Ultimately, this may increase your risk of a sun burn.”

So if trips to the pool or beach are in your near future, put the soda down and avoid putting it on your skin!
